What does this mean for you and your family?  Federal News Radio hosted free online chat with Navy Captain Edward Simmer, the Defense Health Agency’s Deputy Director for the TRICARE Health Plan. Captain Simmer and Federal News Senior Correspondent Mike Causey answered your questions about the TRICARE transition.

Navy Capt. Edward Simmer currently serves as the deputy director of the TRICARE Health Plan at the Defense Health Agency. During his 26 years as a Naval Officer he has served in a number of roles, including commanding officer of Naval Hospital Oak Harbor, Washington; executive officer of Naval Hospital Beaufort, South Carolina; senior executive director for Psychological Health at the Defense Centers of Health for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury; director of Quality for Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia; division psychiatrist for the 2nd Marine Division, and general medical officer on board USS Enterprise (CVN-65). He has also deployed as an individual augmentee in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Army’s 113th Medical Company (Combat Stress Control) and in support of the Detainee Mission at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Simmer led the Navy’s Special Psychiatric Rapid Intervention Team for nine years, leading the mental health response to multiple traumatic events including operational mishaps, terrorist attacks, and hurricanes.

Captain Simmer completed his psychiatry residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. He earned his M.D. from Saint Louis University, M.P.H. from the Eastern Virginia Medical School/Old Dominion University Consortium, and B.A. from Hiram College. He has given numerous professional presentations and has published several journal articles and book chapters. Active in teaching, Simmer has taught many undergraduate, medical school and residency courses. He also served for several years as the medical intern coordinator at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and as the Navy’s intern specialty leader.  Captain Simmer is board certified in general and forensic psychiatry and continues to be active clinically. He has received several military awards, and recently was honored as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
